Have you ever considered writing your memoirs? Leaving stories and information about your life, will certainly be appreciated by your future generations. Don’t delay.
No two people have the same story. Friends who grew up in the same town or attended the same school, may tell totally different stories about the same experience.
How does one start? Don’t try too hard. You are not about to write your autobiography. Just share your stories. One memory at a time.
If you think of anything, record it onto your cell phone. This voice clips can be transcribed into a typed version. Short memories and longer detailed stories will all add to turning your memories into wonderful reading material.
Modern day things can trigger memories. For example, watching your grandchild climbing on the jungle gym in the park, may trigger a memory of the slide that you played on. Autumn leaves falling from trees could take you back to the big tree in your childhood garden, where your father built a treehouse. Memories of family, cousins, friends, holidays, your grandmother’s baking – oh there are so many things buried in your subconscious memory. Close your eyes and day-dream then record what you remember.
I am available to transcribe voice recordings, as a nominal fee. I can also assist, where possible, by researching historical detail and developing family trees.
I work in English only, but am able to translate from Afrikaans.
