Widowhood can a lonely experience.
After years of doing everything with one’s spouse,
suddenly one finds oneself alone. Friends
and family, all of whom are kind and thoughtful, have their own lives to live
and as a result the widow can find herself at home, with nowhere to go.
Last year, a group of widows, aged 50+, decided to form a friendship
group in our residential area. Our first
morning tea was attended by 7 ladies. As
one said, 7 ladies have made 6 new friends in one day!
The group has grown and many activities are enjoyed in
groups of 2 or more. We go to concerts, visit factory shops, go to the
movies, play Rummikub together and much more.
Once a month, we head off for brunch together at a local
restaurant or estate. The Western Cape
has many wonderful places to visit.
We share our memories, our tears, we laugh together and best
of all, we are friends. In time of need,
we rally around and support each other.
When one needs some “space”, we allow for that. Emotional support is available when needed.
We give each other reason to smile.
